Job Description:  Bike Safety School Assembly Instructor

We are seeking freelance instructors to teach a fun, easy bike safety curriculum to groups of elementary and middle school students at schools in the New York City area. Bike Safety School assemblies reach classroom or auditorium-sized audiences with a short, kid-friendly video, and an interactive game show-style “quiz”. Assembly sessions typically last 40 minutes to an hour, though some schools may need an instructor to move from classroom to classroom to do a series of sessions. The work is irregular and scheduled on an as-needed basis when schools contact Bike New York to request a bike safety program.

Bike Safety School Assembly Instructors should have some or all of the following qualifications:

● Minimum Associates Degree.

● Be an experienced, enthusiastic cyclist, with a passion for sharing the joys of cycling with others;

● Have experience teaching or working groups of kids in an educational or youth program settings, and be able to demonstrate good classroom/group management skills;

● Be comfortable with public speaking, especially with school children.

● Knowledge of common youth bike crash types; the causes of youth bike crashes; familiarity with kids’ view of the world of traffic; and what kids need to know to keep themselves safe (Bike New York will provide training on this)

 

Youth Program Bike Instructors will have the following job duties:

● Teach Bike New York’s Bike Driver’s Ed assembly program to school groups ranging in age from 9-15 (Bike New York will provide training);

● Be positive, not scary, about cycling

● Travel to schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City on weekdays

Job Description:  Youth Program Bike Instructor

We seeking instructors who can teach in either our spring after-school program,  our summer camp program, or both.

Bike New York works with established youth organizations in New York City to teach kids  how to ride a bike,  to teach basic bike handling and traffic safety skills to young cyclists, and to lead rides in New York City Parks and Greenways.      We provide a curriculum, training, and a fleet of bikes and helmets and other necessary equipment, plus 2 instructors at each of our locations.

 

Bike New York  Youth Program Instructor is a part-time seasonal position, and reports to the Director of Education.    Spring after school programs would be about 15 hours per week from April through late June.   The summer camp program is 40 hours a week from July 5 through about August 25.

 

Youth Program Bike Instructors should have some or all of the following qualifications:

●Minimum bachelor’s degree or 2 years training in a college level education, physical education or recreation program;

●Be an experienced, enthusiastic cyclist, with a passion for sharing the joys of cycling with others;

●Have experience working groups of kids in an educational, youth program or camp setting, and be able to demonstrate good classroom/group management skills;

●Be flexible in working with unpredictable youth program conditions;

●Successful candidates will need to have a background check and take a first aid / CPR class at Bike New York’s expense.

●Have a valid driver’s license;

 

Youth Program Bike Instructors will have the following job duties:

●Teach Bike New York’s Learn to Ride program to children who don’t know how to ride a bike;

●Teach Bike New York’s Bike Driver’s Ed curriculum to groups of 10-15 kids who already know how to ride a bike, as preparation to taking them out on group bike rides;

●Determine whether kids have adequate skills to go “off site” for group bike rides;

●Lead safe, smooth-functioning group rides off site;

●Work closely with summer camp directors and staff according to their schedules and conditions.

●Manage a fleet of up to 35 bikes and helmets, ensuring that equipment is in place before each day starts, and stored securely when not in use, and performing minor maintenance or alerting Bike New York staff to bigger mechanical issues.

Freelance Class Captain Position Description

Each spring and summer, Bike New York’s Education Department hosts hundreds of free public classes throughout New York City – in parks, school play yards, and at public events.  These classes teach groups of kids and adults how to ride a bike for the first time, how to ride with more skill, and how to ride on city streets.

 

Freelance “captains” lead our dozen+ classes each weekend and serve as the face of Bike New York to thousands of people each year. Additionally, captains act as liaisons between Bike New York volunteers, who help teach classes, and the organization itself.  This year, as our public education program grows, we are expanding the number of freelance captains we employ.

 

 

Bike New York seeks charismatic, well organized, and dependable professionals to join our roster of freelance class captains this season (April through September).  The ideal applicants are passionate about bicycling.  They are personable, independent problem-solvers with management experience, and have experience as public speakers and/or educators.

 

Class captains are expected to provide exceptional customer service and ensure that classes run smoothly for all involved, including students, volunteers, and class hosts.  Class captains are responsible for mastering Bike New York’s various curricula and techniques, and are responsible for the security of all equipment during classes (including bikes, helmets, tools, etc.).

 

Responsibilities include:

 

-       Serve as the liaison between BNY and the class site host (ex: NYC Dept. of Parks and Rec)

-       Assign, equip, oversee, and provide guidance to volunteer instructors

-       Lead instruction according to BNY curricula and training

-       Manage the security of Bike New York’s bikes, equipment, locks, and keys during classes

-       Identify equipment that requires repair or replacement

-       Provide timely feedback on classes and volunteer instructors to BNY staff

-       Volunteer at a minimum of two classes each season (as professional development)

 

Qualifications:

 

-       Experience volunteering at BNY classes (or willingness to gain experience soon)

-       Experience in the field of education or in making public presentations

-       Excellent customer service and volunteer management skills

-       Ability to make minor bike adjustments and repairs and ability to identify when a bicycle is not suitable for use

 

Flat rate salary varies from $150 to $200 per class (three to five hours, respectively), plus re-imbursement for job related expenses (such as volunteer snacks and drinks).

Position Title

Communications and Customer Service Intern

Duration

This is a semester-long internship requiring approximately 10-15 hours per week.  Interns may be rolled over into the summer upon demonstration of satisfactory performance.

Description

Bike New York is looking for a communications and customer service intern to augment the communications team during the busy season.

Responsibilities

  • Writing for digital communications including social media, website and the monthly newsletter
  • Research and Media monitoring
  • Handling customer service calls about Bike New York rides, classes and tour logistics
  • Special projects as assigned

Qualifications

Interns must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Interns must also be enrolled in an accredited degree program studying Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field.

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship.  Students must earn credit through their university for the duration of this position.  The intern will gain valuable experience in the field of communications and contribute to the facilitation of North America’s largest cycling event as well as bicycle education throughout New York City.

Event Management Intern Job Description:

Bike New York seeks several interns within the Event Management Department  to assist with planning and execution of the 2012 TD Five Boro Bike Tour and 2012 Bike Expo New York.  Under the supervision of the Director & Assistant Director of Events, interns will assist with NYC permitting, coordinating vendor services & equipment rentals, creation of operational timetables, volunteer management & training, site management, community outreach, staff management, etc.

Interns will have the opportunity to work on a world class athletic event. Long hours, some weekend work, and a sense of humor are required. Internship is unpaid, but may be used for college credit. Term of Employment: January 2012 through May 2012.
