We Support

Proceeds from Bike New York events support its mission of promoting bicycling and bicycle safety. The primary vehicle for this is Bike New York's in-house Bicycle Education Program, which offers free classes and bike safety trainings for schools, companies, educators, and the public. More Info >

Direct Funding

Bike New York also supports organizations working toward similar goals. In 2008, it made substantial financial contributions to:

Traffic Safety for New York, part of New York City's Department of Transportation. NYCDOT offers an extensive program of safety education in New York City's schools and beyond. Kids and adults learn how and why to use safety belts and child car safety seats, pedestrian and bicycle safety skills, and the importance of using helmets and other protective gear while bicycling and skating.

In each of New York City's five boroughs, NYCDOT has a Safety City where children at the third-grade level can practice their safety skills. Access Safety City in northern Manhattan has the additional feature of being accessible to children and adults with visual, hearing, or mobility disabilities. Bike New York donations support bicycles and safety equipment, helmet-fitting stations, and other aspects of Safety City programming. The NYCDOT Safety Education office is reachable at 212 442 7662 or online.

Recycle-A-Bicycle, an innovative youth training and environmental education initiative in New York City, for its summertime youth Ride Club series and Summer Youth Employment program. Past collaborations between Bike New York and Recycle-A-Bicycle include producing the training manual One Revolution at a Time: A Guide to Starting and Running Youth Bike Clubs (2002), supporting student participation in the 2005 National Bike Summit, and hosting the League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Education Leaders' Conference in 2005.

East Coast Greenway Alliance to fund its first detailed weekend trip guide, featuring the portion of the Maine-Florida route that travels through New York. Produced as a print brochure with an online supplement, the guide will invite walkers and bicyclists to explore a route along the Hudson River Greenway, the East River Esplanade, Central Park, and points in between for two days. Expected publication: September 2008.
