Your Brain on Bikes
The glutes and quads get a lot of press when science tries to explain how your body produces the movement of cycling, but what about the brain? Muscles don’t pedal by themselves. How do you generate the motor patterns that result in staying upright on a bicycle and pedaling it forward? How does the ability to bicycle illuminate how the body works? Can you do anything to make those motor patterns work better? Bob Nelson, a physical therapist at H&D Physical Therapy (hdphysicaltherapy.com) and founder of the LGBT bike club Fast and Fabulous (fastnfab.org), tackles these and other questions in a talk illustrated through the miracle of Power Point.

The Enlightened Cyclist
For most of us, our commute is the only part of our day during which it’s perfectly normal to confront anger, hostility, danger, and even death–especially if we ride a bike. Why is this? What can we do about it? And how can we transform the most frustrating part of our day into the most transcendent? Blogger and author Bike Snob NYC will explore these questions and more with humor and irreverence that is tempered by his love for cycling.

A History of Cycling in NYC
Acclaimed author and bike historian David V. Herlihy will take us on a romp through New York’s colorful cycling history. As far back as 1819, a “velocipede” rink at Bowling Green showcased the original kick-propelled two-wheeler. The city was a cycling hotbed during the original bicycle craze of 1868-69, the high-wheeling 1880s, and the “safety” boom of the 1890s. In the automotive age, New York once again led the way, introducing Americans to new cycling designs and riding styles.
