Hello! Welcome to the first ever post about Bike New York’s education volunteers! I’m glad you’ve found your way to this page. I am Francesca, the Volunteer Manager for the educational programming offered by Bike New York.
To start off, I’ll introduce myself. I’m a 20-something recent transplant and a bike-crazy lover of life. Less than a year ago, I moved to New York from my hometown, Seattle. Yes, I love Nirvana, coffee, and the rain, and on occasion I’ve been known to wear flannel. I learned to ride a bike at age 20 and that’s what got me into this whole wonderful world of cycling and education. I love dancing, seafood, typewriters, running, practicing Portuguese, warm weather, and most importantly, hanging out with the folks I love!
What is my job and why am I blogging about it? Bike New York relies on volunteers to make every single part of our organization work. Education volunteers help teach Learn to Ride adults, Learn to Ride kids, Bicycling Basics, and Bike Driver’s Ed. classes. Our volunteers are a group of phenomenal, fun-loving, diverse, enthusiastic, lovers of cycling, education, and philanthropy. It’s my job to find new volunteers, grow the group, train our volunteers, and coordinate them so each class is covered with knowledgeable instructors. Bike New York volunteers are awesome, and my job is to work with them. Therefore, I love my job! This blog will provide you with updates from the volunteer world. I will post some volunteer opportunities here. And most exciting, I plan to spotlight a volunteer every few weeks. (Check out our latest e-newsletter to see the first spotlight of this kind).
Last night I ran a new volunteer training at beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park. Gorgeous weather, gorgeous views, gorgeous people… and I am thrilled to say 15 amazing folks turned out for it. Our new volunteers seemed to be from all walks of life—fun, knowledgeable, and fantastic additions to the team. Most notably, one of the women at the training learned to ride at a Bike New York class two weeks ago! Last night she was trained so she can teach others. Now THAT is amazing.
