New York Bicycle Coalition

NYBC advocates for pro-bicycle policies:
NYBC monitors legislation at the local, state and federal levels.  They educate legislators about specific policies that bicyclists need to know in order to be safe and to feel respected. We remind policymakers that bicyclists are voters, tax payers, business people and key members of the community and that they expect the same level of service as motor vehicle drivers.

NYBC educates New Yorkers about the benefits of bicycling and walking:
NYBC educates policy makers, bureaucrats, private businesses and the general public about the value that safe cycling and walking bring to urban and rural environments.   Their Safety Problem Solving Manual is a comprehensive look at safety and advocacy for bicyclists, pedestrians and transportation advocates and professionals across New York State. Download the manual.

NYBC is a technical and training resource:
NYBC staff and Board have a wealth of experience in transportation planning, infrastructure development and health. NYBC provides assistance to bicycle advocates and government entities in order to get more bicycle infrastructure projects completed.

NYBC promotes safe bicycling riding:
NYBC participates in bicyclist education and “train the trainer” sessions. The League of American Bicyclists education program is the only nationally-recognized bicycling education program with certified instructors. Its hallmark is on-the-road training with an emphasis on learning to ride safely and effectively in all conditions of road and traffic. The Traffic Skills 101 nine-hour certification course gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age 14, this fast-paced course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.

The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition

The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition is New Jersey’s state-wide advocacy organization for bicyclist and pedestrian rights. NJBWC’s mission is to:

  • PROTECT the rights and safety of New Jersey bicyclists and walkers
  • PROMOTE bicycling and walking for fun, fitness, and transportation
  • EDUCATE bicyclists, walkers, and drivers about their rights and responsibilities
  • CONNECT New Jersey communities with a smarter transportation system

Underpinning all the work of NJBWC are the grassroots advocacy efforts with schools and educational institutions, bike shops, bike clubs, advocacy organizations, planning agencies, and government officials and politicians at the local, state, and national levels to make New Jersey a safer place and encourage many more people to ride bicycles, walk and use public transportation.

The 4th annual NEW JERSEY BIKE & WALK SUMMIT will be held in New Brunswick in collaboration with the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy of Rutgers University.   The date is Saturday, February 23, 2013. All New Jersey and tri-state area cyclists, advocates, event organizers, promoters, dealers, club members, and community advocacy groups will find something for themselves at the Summit. Read about last year’s Summit and about NJBWC.
