start from aboveDOT Commissionergetting rolling
The Tour took off under gray skies but on dry streets, to the surprise of everyone who paid attention to the forecast for heavy rain. DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan spoke to the crowds about the city's goal of doubling bike trips by 2015. 42 miles to go!
high fives at cheer zone cherry blossoms happy to be in the park
The Commerce Bank Cheer Zone supplied high fives aplenty. After passing through the skyscraper-lined streets Midtown, Tour riders entered another world: the spring bloom at Central Park. These folks just climbed one of the few hills of the route, aside from the bridges.

The A Team, lookin' good at the final rest stop in Brooklyn! A rare chance to bike on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Hooray for reaching the Festival!
festival from bridge pledging to go green happy to be in NYC
The finish line is still 3 miles away, but the crowd celebrates right here at Fort Wadsworth in Gateway National Recreation Area, Staten Island. Riders who signed a pledge to go green resulted in a $20,000 donation from Commerce Bank to New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for its Greenway Expansion Project. This warm, sunny, not-too-windy day provided the best riding--and lounging--conditions in recent memory.

Views of the USS Intrepid, currently undergoing renovation, on the final stretch of the ride. Bike New York staff and volunteers help load the ferries back to Manhattan. There's no bridge between Staten Island and Manhattan, so a ferry ride completes the journey.
