A familiar look at the start of the Harlem Valley Rail Ride: gray clouds above Eddie Collins Field in Millerton. Fortunately, the day stayed mostly dry. The Millerton Police Department started a bike squad thanks to a donation of two bikes from Bike New York. Pictured here, five officers along with Millerton Mayor John Scutieri and Town of Northeast Supervisor David Sherman. Mayor Scutieri heads out to tackle the century.

Riders leave the cars behind as they turn onto the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in downtown Millerton. The former train station at the trailhead. This portion of the trail is about 12 miles and passes many farms and fields.

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association is working toward making a 46-mile rail trail between Wassaic and Chatham, New York. Routes of all five distances started out along the trail. The 22-mile ride was almost completely on the gentle rail trail.

Thanks to Salisbury Bank for lending a hand at the Wassaic rest area! Bike repair at the ready. A classic farm view in northern Dutchess County--see what we mean about this being summer's most scenic ride? Alas, the corn was not quite ripe.

The trail ends where the Metro-North train line picks up in Wassaic. Mudge Pond, over the border in Connecticut. Smiling wide helps with air intake up all those hills!

The view from Mount Washington, Massachusetts, one of the toughest climbs for the 75- and 100-mile riders. Another classic country view. For their efforts, riders received a special treat: "This bike climbed Mount Washington" on a bandanna.

The downhill also makes for a good reward! Copake Falls rest area volunteers at another section of the rail trail. The SAG team kept their eyes on the ride all day. They got off easy compared to last year's rainy day.

Recharging at the rest area. A feline spectator minds the road. The last climb--Winchell Mountain, just over the Columbia County border from Millerton.

Back at Eddie Collins Field, riders were deservedly proud of their accomplishment. Everyone received a free T-shirt. Bike New York still has two more rides coming up this season. Collect all the shirts!

Local musicians made it easy to enjoy the afternoon. Riders, locals, friends and family kicked back to make the most of the summer day. Everyone's a kid at heart when it comes to popsicles!
