Bike Ed Volunteers

Bike New York loves its volunteers! Our fantastic Education Volunteer corps make all of our free classes and programming possible.

We show our appreciation in many ways including, parties, prizes, discounts at bike shops, and even free entry to our regional rides or the TD Five Boro Bike Tour!

Rewards are based on a points system:

  • Volunteers receive one point for every hour (not including travel time) spent teaching, training, or tabling for Bike New York.
  • A bonus point can be accrued by bringing a friend to an event, or by teaching a class in a borough other than your own.

Prizes are awarded to our volunteers based on how many points they accrue:

  • Steel level volunteers have one to 9 points and receive a thank-you packet from Bike New York, with bike swag, coupon, and other BNY gear.
  • Aluminum level volunteers have 10 volunteer points and will never have to worry about being dehydrated, since they will receive our fantastic new stainless steel Bike New York water bottles!
  • Titanium level volunteers have 20 points. In the works for these volunteers is a special VIP Volunteer Discount Card offering discounts at bike shops, and at the end of the season we’ll give out few of our Bike New York jackets to volunteers with more than 20 points (while supplies last).
  • Volunteers who accumulate 30 volunteer points receive their choice of either guaranteed entrance to the 2012 TD Five Boro Bike Tour (please note: registration fee still applies) or free entrance to one of our regional rides, Discover Hudson Valley or Twin Lights Rides!
  • And finally, volunteers who accrue 40 points during the season will be guaranteed free entry to the 2012 TD Five Boro Bike Tour!

Students are Saying

"I am 27 years old and I had never been on a bicycle until the class. This was something I always wanted to learn, but the more years that passed the more anxious I felt about the process of learning. Now I am really exited about cycling, and I am looking forward to the summer on wheels! I even inspired my older sister to learn!"

"Thanks so much, I couldn't tell you guys enough how grateful I am for the wonderful program you have and the skillful professionals that you are! I had a great time! Thank you for all your volunteers and all the people that make these bike lessons for adults happen! I am so very happy—I am 60 yrs young, never learned to ride a bike and with your volunteer staff's guidance, patience and instructions, I learned the same day!"

"Just want to thank you for the wonderful teaching session today. 25 years after the first attempt, I finally learned how to ride a bike--in two hours! I think you have a great program."

"Just wanted to thank you guys for starting me on skill I will have for a lifetime."

Teachers are Saying

"I must say, I've been teaching Phys Ed for a long time. [Bike Driver's Ed] is probably my favorite unit that I've ever covered. It gives the kids a chance to work at their own level, be outdoors, get great exercise, use muscles that they haven't used in a while, and it's bringing all the different abilities together in one unit. It's fabulous."--Southampton Intermediate School PE teacher, Long Island, NY, Spring 2010

"This new [Bike Driver's Ed] program is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more than simply sitting on a bike and pedaling! It will give them the tools they need to go out and exercise safely, while exploring their surroundings and benefiting from a lifetime activity that can stay with them for years to come. Who knows, we may inspire the next Lance Armstrong!"--Wayside Elementary teacher, Ocean Township, NJ, Fall 2009

"The kids absolutely love [Bike Driver's Ed]!!!! They are telling me that this is the best unit ever . . . and I am talking about kids who do not usually enjoy physical education. The news is spreading because other students have been asking why biking is not offered during their phys. ed. period."--PE teacher from Long Island, April 2009

"I have never walked out of a workshop with so much useful information."--PE teacher from Connecticut, April 2009 Bike Driver's Ed Training
